Banks and post offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day, but most major restaurant, grocery and retail chains will remain open on the holiday.
Businesses like Walmart, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A and Target, among others, will keep their doors open for the federal holiday this year. The stock market, however, will also be closed on Thursday.
The origins of July 4th date back to when Philadelphians celebrated the first anniversary of American independence with a “spontaneous celebration,” described in a letter from John Adams to his daughter, Abigail, according to the Library of Congress.
However, the annual celebration of the holiday did not become common until after the War of 1812, when events such as the dedication ceremonies of the Erie Canal and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad were scheduled to coincide with July 4 festivities. Congress passed a law making Independence Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1870.
Here’s what you need to know about what’s open and closed on July 4th this year.
