YouTube Music is testing a generative AI feature that lets you enter a prompt to create a personalized radio station.
Once deployed to your device/app/account, a “Request Music Any Way You Want” card will appear in your home feed. Note the inclusion of the existing “Start Radio” button.
This purple/pink prompt is similar to the persistent “Create a Radio: Your Music Tuner” card that gained a dedicated Library tab > New FAB Shortcut earlier this year.
This opens a chat-based UI with a field at the bottom that lets you “Request Music.” It launches as a full-screen UI with another “Experience” badge in the top-right corner.
You can also enter a prompt by voice, and YTM explains how: “AI-generated responses are experimental. Quality and accuracy may vary. Please do not enter confidential or personal information about yourself or others.”
YTM offers a two-line carousel of suggestions: catchy pop choruses, epic soundtracks, catchy pop anthems, and Moscow’s rock scene. There’s also “Surprise me!”
YouTube Music then generates a radio station and uses the existing playlist card to display the result. Your prompt is used as the station name, while it is labeled “Created for you” and is accompanied by a description.
For “Queer Hip Hop Beats,” YTM generated “Rhymes and flows from the heart, a celebration of queer pride in hip hop’s art.” You then see the first three songs with buttons to play/pause, save to your library, and a drop-down menu.
So far, there’s only one report on YouTube Music’s AI radio creator. It doesn’t appear on the devices we tested today. It’s a shame YouTube Music doesn’t have an equivalent on youtube.com/new to allow more people to test it out. It’ll be interesting to see if it requires a YouTube Premium subscription to access.
