YouTube is trying another way to leverage AI, this time within YouTube Music, with Music Premium subscribers now being able to try out a new “AI-generated radio” option, which lets you personalize by describing what you want to hear.
As you can see in this example shared by 9 to 5 Google, YouTube’s AI radio station option effectively creates custom playlists based on conversational prompts: So if you’re in the mood to listen to “angry metal music” or “relaxing instrumentals with female vocals,” the system can serve up a succession of tracks tailored to that prompt.
This probably isn’t a huge leap in terms of AI applications, but on the other hand, it could be an interesting addition if you could request very specific, niche music and it would be delivered to you.
But in reality, the system uses YouTube’s existing keyword matching based on each track’s text tags to provide music matching. The key here is the level of customization it enables, but either way it could be an interesting addition.
Like other platforms, YouTube is trying to integrate AI wherever possible to stay on top of the latest trends. YouTube is also testing AI background generation for video clips, and AI music generation for custom soundtracks. AI recommendations for new video ideas, the ability to skip to the next most relevant part of a clip, and more.
These are all practical and valuable uses of AI that should provide utility in both the creation and viewing process.
