Karawang, West Java (ANTARA) – Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has affirmed Indonesia’s desire to become a key player in global electric vehicle (EV) supply chains.
The minister made the statement due to Indonesia’s abundant natural resources, such as nickel, which is the main material for electric vehicle batteries.
“Indonesia is ready to become a key player in global electric vehicle supply chains, from upstream to downstream,” he said at the inauguration of Hyundai-LG Indonesia (HLI) Green Power’s electric vehicle and battery ecosystem factory in Karawang, West Java, on Wednesday.
He noted that Indonesia can be a key player in the global electric vehicle production ecosystem, given that the current global demand for electric vehicles is increasing at an unprecedented rate.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that global electric vehicle use will reach 17 million vehicles by the end of 2024, with sales up 25% from the previous year.
Furthermore, Pandjaitan said that the inauguration of HLI Green Power’s lithium battery and electric vehicle ecosystem plant is a strategic step by the Indonesian government to achieve economic improvement and make Indonesia a leader in electric vehicle production in Southeast Asia.
“This strategic step not only improves our economy, but also creates thousands of jobs, stimulates innovation and develops the skills of our workforce,” he noted.
The minister said earlier that the inauguration of the HLI Green Power plant in Karawang is a form of commitment by the Indonesian government to achieve net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060.
The plant, built through a collaboration between Indonesia and South Korea, is the largest lithium battery and electric vehicle factory in Southeast Asia, capable of producing 50,000 units of electric cars annually.
