The city of Windsor has closed Windsor Lake until further notice after the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment confirmed a harmful algae bloom. Recreational activities on the lake such as tubing and water skiing will be prohibited starting July 3.
According to the City of Windsor, “Motorized annual permit holders are still permitted on the lake during the closure; non-motorized boaters may use their permits at their own risk, although it is strongly recommended that they remain off the water. The City of Windsor’s Fourth of July festivities at Boardwalk Park will continue as scheduled, although the swimming beach, dog park and watercraft rentals will be closed.”
“We were hopeful based on last week’s testing results that water quality would have improved in time for the July 4 holiday,” Parks, Recreation and Culture Director Tara Fotsch said in a statement. “Unfortunately, due to additional testing, our team has made the difficult decision to close the lake in accordance with protocol.”
In May, the city launched four new LG Sonic MPC Buoys on Windsor Lake to help combat harmful algae blooms. The buoys use ultrasonic waves to disrupt algae, depriving it of the sunlight it needs to grow.
