Amid a growing global debate about human interaction with wildlife, a recent viral video has sparked controversy. The video shows a careless safari visitor throwing a plastic bag into a hippo’s mouth, sparking outrage online, with many social media users calling on authorities to take stern action against the man.
The incident happened at a safari park in West Java, Indonesia. In the video that went viral, the hippo is seen standing at the edge of its enclosure in the water with its mouth open. A person is seen trying to feed the hippo a carrot from a car near the enclosure. However, another passenger in the car throws a plastic bag into the hippo’s mouth, which the hippo begins to chew on.
Managers are now tracking down the male visitor seen in the video. “We have identified the license plate number of the vehicle he was in and we ask him to issue a public apology to educate other visitors to follow the standard operating procedures of Indonesian Safari Parks,” park spokesman Alexander Zulkarnain said. Jakarta Globe Saturday.
“We collected information from the park’s security guards and CCTV cameras. The guards said the visitor had been reprimanded multiple times for opening the window in the tiger area,” he added.
Officials said the Wildlife Protection Act protects all living creatures within the sanctuary and any mistreatment of them could result in legal action.
Additionally, the hippo has been examined and is in good health.
