St. Xavier High School was transformed into a medical center on Saturday. The clinic, co-hosted by Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield and the University of Cincinnati chapter of Remote Area Medical, provided dental, vision and medical care to patients, all at no cost. Brad Sands is the site director for Remote Area Medical. This weekend, he and other physicians will treat patients whether they have health insurance or not. “This is the most rewarding job I’ve ever had in medicine,” Sands says. RAM staff and physicians are on the ground wherever they’re needed across the country. Sands says their goal is to make an impact. “Our mission is to prevent pain and relieve suffering.” This two-day visit to serve patients in the Cincinnati area was born from Vishwa Ram’s vision. “It’s so exciting to see all the people who need the care we’re providing today and to see it actually come to fruition,” says Ram. Ram is a St. Xavier graduate and a fourth-year pre-med student at the University of Cincinnati. He says he’s impressed with the scope of testing RAM’s doctors are doing. “We have a lot of dental tents here. We have great volunteer doctors who help patients with cleanings, fillings, extractions. We have dental x-rays over there, and we have clean sides and buckets over here, sterilizing all the instruments so we can give them the best care possible.” For these patients, the clinic is a lifeline. Anthem’s Neia Williams describes RAM as a bridge to healthcare that has been deferred and often ignored in parts of the community. “Its impact is definitely needed. There are a lot of challenges in health and reasons why people don’t have regular access.” For future doctor Ram, the two-day clinic is a diagnosis and prescription full of anticipation and care. “Even in this position, we have years of knowledge about doctors that our predecessors gave us. I think it’s our job to make the most of it and use it for good,” he said.
