As maternal and child health in Canada suffers from continuing deficiencies, the Foundation urges immediate prevention and intervention through a multifaceted approach.
OTTAWA, July 23, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Despite being a high-income country with a universal health care system, Canada faces significant challenges in maternal health, not only in mortality but also morbidity, i.e. symptoms and complications related to pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.
Statistics show that the maternal mortality rate in Canada is 8.53 per 100,000 births in 2022This marks a 154.9% increase since 2000. This increase highlights the need for a concerted effort to reverse this trend and ensure the safety of Canadian mothers, especially minority mothers who are disproportionately affected.

“Every maternal death is a terrible tragedy, especially since many are preventable. To prevent these deaths, it is imperative that we know why they happen and that we need a national registry that everyone can consider,” said CFWH President Dr George Carson.
