JAKARTA, July 27 (Xinhua) — PT Shenhua Guohua Energy Co., Ltd. (SGPJB), a joint venture between Sino-Indonesian energy companies, launched an open day event for mangrove conservation on Friday to coincide with UNESCO’s International Day of Mangrove Ecosystem Conservation.
Themed “We join hands to invest in nature and plant mangroves for the future of humanity”, the event brought together around 60 environmental activists and 20 student representatives from China and Indonesia, who jointly planted mangrove seedlings and released milkfish fry into the ecosystem during the event.
SGPJB President Director Zhao Zhigang highlighted the company’s dedication to environmental protection in Indonesia, especially mangrove conservation.
“By conducting community education and awareness campaigns, we aim to raise public awareness on mangrove protection and encourage more social participation in mangrove conservation activities,” he said.
Indonesia’s PLN Nusantara Renewables president Harjono highlighted the environmental benefits of mangroves: “Mangroves have the ability to absorb carbon emissions and protect Indonesia from various environmental impacts,” he said.
“By planting mangrove seedlings, we can raise awareness of the importance of ecological balance. We hope this small step will be a good start towards a more sustainable future,” he added.
Indonesia’s coastline is dotted with vast expanses of mangrove forests that play a vital role in purifying seawater, resisting wind and waves, absorbing carbon dioxide emissions, and maintaining biodiversity.■
