ParisState-owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir met with TikTok CEO Shaw Zii Chu and YouTube CEO Neil Mohan to discuss the potential of Indonesia’s digital economy, which is projected to reach Rp 4,500 trillion by 2030.
“I spoke about the potential for Indonesia’s digital economy to reach IDR 4,500 trillion, making it the largest in Southeast Asia,” Thohir was quoted as saying on his Instagram account on Saturday.
The meeting took place during a dinner at the Louvre Museum in France. Thohir said both Mohan and Choo expressed their belief in the potential of Indonesia’s digital economy and their readiness to support its development.
“They are ready to promote local creators while upholding Indonesia’s positive culture around the world,” he said.
In addition to meeting Mohan and Choo, Thohir also met Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus and Lakshmi Mittal, owner of the world’s second-largest steel mill, during a dinner with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the same venue.
Thohir noted that the Grameen Bank, founded by Yunus, aims to provide small loans to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that cannot borrow from commercial banks.
“The concept inspired Indonesia’s PNM Mekaar programme, which currently has 15.2 million customers,” he said.
Minister Eric Thohir, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), was visiting France in connection with the 2024 Paris Olympics.
During his visit, Thohir met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and French President Emmanuel Macron and attended the 142nd IOC Session in Paris, France.
The Ministry of Finance’s (Kemenkew) Directorate General of Taxation (DJP) recorded revenue from the digital economy sector at Rp 24.99 trillion as of May 30.
The amount comes from value-added tax (VAT) of Rp20.15 trillion, cryptocurrency tax of Rp746.16 billion, and fintech (P2P lending) tax of Rp2.11 trillion collected from technology companies operating in Indonesia, including TikTok’s parent company ByteDance and YouTube’s parent company Google.
