Dublin, July 16, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The “Indonesia Medical Device Industry Research Report 2024-2033” report has ResearchAndMarkets.com Recruitment.
Indonesia’s medical device market reached US$4.38 billion in 2023. According to the publisher, this growth is mainly due to the expansion of both public and private hospitals and the introduction of Indonesia’s public health insurance scheme, BPJS-Kesehatan (Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional, or JKN), in 2014. As of July 2023, the scheme covers 258.2 million people, approximately 90.34% of Indonesia’s total population. These factors have increased the demand for advanced medical equipment and supplies, driving the continued growth of Indonesia’s medical device market.
Indonesia is highly dependent on imports for medical devices, with estimates that more than 70% of medical devices are imported, a figure that had reached 88% before 2022. To boost the country’s domestic medical device industry, Indonesia introduced local content requirements in June 2021, banning the import of 5,400 medical devices across 79 categories in its public procurement system unless they meet the 40% local content requirement.
Despite government efforts to encourage domestic production and adjust import tariffs, Indonesia remains heavily dependent on imports of advanced medical equipment, the publication said. Currently, Indonesia mainly produces and exports low-value and less technologically advanced medical consumables, such as surgical gloves and bandages.
Indonesia encourages foreign investment in the medical equipment sector. The government has stated that it will prioritize the use of domestically produced medical supplies and will not import medical equipment that can be produced locally, and is encouraging foreign companies to set up manufacturing plants in Indonesia.
Additionally, Presidential Regulation No. 10 on the Investment List, issued in February 2021, promotes foreign investment by allowing companies to have 100% foreign ownership of imported and regulatory approved medical devices, and gives foreign companies full legal control over their subsidiaries in Indonesia.
Driven by population growth, economic development and the introduction of investment promotion policies, the publisher predicts that Indonesia’s medical device market will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.1% from 2024 to 2033, reaching US$10.47 billion by 2033.
