LINCOLN, NE – In just over a week, Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly will lead a trade delegation of more than 20 members to Indonesia. The week-and-a-half visit will include representatives from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA), the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED), the University of Nebraska, and several representatives from Nebraska agricultural producers.
“Indonesia is growing rapidly and is a major market for Nebraska agricultural exports,” said Lt. Governor Kelly. “We are excited to explore this dynamic market and build new partnerships that will directly benefit the Nebraska economy.”
The first day of operations, July 15, will include a U.S. Embassy briefing. Other notable activities on the trip include participation in the Indo Livestock Expo and Forum, a tour of the Southeast Asia Food and Agricultural Science and Technology Center, meeting with Indonesian beef import associations, and tours of dairies, feed mills, and supply operations. Additional stops will provide opportunities to showcase the quality of Nebraska beef, pork, soybeans, and other food products. Last fall, Nebraska beef was featured on the popular competitive cooking show “MasterChef-Indonesia.”
Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia, the fourth most populous country in the world, and offers significant economic development opportunities. Indonesia is one of Nebraska’s top 10 export markets at $139 million and is experiencing rapid growth in GDP and population. Lieutenant Governor Kelly and the delegation will meet with government officials, business leaders, and stakeholders to promote Nebraska’s value to Indonesia.
“We are uniquely positioned to meet the growing demand for agricultural products and identify new opportunities to partner with Indonesia in the future,” said Sherry Vinton, Director of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA). “The most exciting thing about Nebraska is our people, and when we meet with new business partners face-to-face, it delivers short- and long-term results. We are laying the foundation for future generations.”
The trade mission will end on July 24. Governor Jim Pillen was originally scheduled to lead the trade mission. However, due to the upcoming special session, which will convene immediately after the trade mission – last week – the governor has asked Lieutenant Governor Kelly to lead the delegation on his behalf.
