Jakarta, July 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s North Sumatra province on Saturday evening but did not produce any large waves, Indonesia’s meteorological, climate and geophysical agency said.
The quake struck at 19:05 Jakarta time (12:05 GMT) with its epicentre 153 kilometres southwest of West Nias Regency and a depth of 13 kilometres below the seabed, the agency said, Xinhua reported.
Japan Meteorological Agency officials did not issue a tsunami warning because they did not expect the quake to generate large waves.
Indonesia is an island nation located on the seismically active “Pacific Ring of Fire,” making the country prone to frequent earthquakes.
