KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – The Philippines and Indonesia have qualified for the FIBA U-18 Asia Cup 2024 after finishing as the top two teams in the SEABA Qualifiers.
Both proud teams booked their places in the continental competition on Saturday after winning the match 2-0 at the MABA Stadium in the Malaysian capital.
Gilas defeated Thailand 87-53 to claim their first win, while the young Timnath defeated Malaysia 77-64 to decide the representative match between the two teams. With this result, both losing teams are now 0-2.
The Philippines beat Indonesia 87-64 on Sunday to qualify for the U-18 Asia Cup, which will be played in Amman, Jordan, from Sept. 2-9. Guard Andy Gemmao led the team with 29 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists.
This will be the Philippines’ eighth consecutive appearance at the U-18 Asian Cup, while Indonesia’s first appearance since the 2018 tournament in Thailand.
The Philippines and Indonesia are the latest teams to qualify for the U-18 Asian Cup, following other sub-zone qualifiers held in the past few weeks, namely India (SABA), Kazakhstan (CABA), WABA teams Iran, Lebanon and hosts Jordan.
The duo went 1-2 at the 2023 FIBA U-17 Oceania Championship in Papua New Guinea and will join other East Asian teams including defending champions South Korea, Japan, China, Chinese Taipei, Mongolia, Australia and New Zealand.
The top two teams from the GBA (Gulf) Qualifier, which will be held in Kuwait from July 29 to August 2, will make up the 16 teams that will compete in the U-18 Asian Cup.
