JAKARTA, July 10 (Bernama) — Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Professor Ahmad Muhammad Ahmad At Tayeb, met at Merdeka Palace on Tuesday to discuss Indonesia-Egypt relations on education, peace and inter-religious dialogue.
The meeting in Jakarta was part of Sheikh Al-Azhar’s tour of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia and Thailand, and his third visit to Indonesia to promote moderate Islam.
During the meeting, President Widodo, also known as Jokowi, expressed strong support for the establishment of an Al-Azhar Markaz Tatweel branch in Indonesia, given the large number of Indonesian students studying in Egypt.
“Currently, 95 percent of Indonesians living in Egypt are students,” President Jokowi said in a post on his official X account.
During the talks, they also stressed the importance of global unity in addressing the conflict and promoting peace, particularly in Gaza, Palestine.
In a statement after the meeting, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said President Joko Widodo stressed the importance of Sheikh Al-Azhar’s visit in promoting peace and tolerance.
