Prisma Health announced it is investing $41 million to add new smart beds across the health system.
Approximately 1,500 inpatient beds will be replaced with Hillrom smart beds and surfaces to improve the patient experience. Prisma staff will also be able to use the smart beds to provide enhanced care to patients in the intensive care unit, labor and delivery, medical and surgical units and bariatric units.
The beds will feature Hercules patient repositioning technology that allows a caregiver to safely reposition a patient. The bed’s advanced technology will also help prevent falls, reduce pressure ulcers, increase comfort and improve communication.
Other innovative features of the smart bed include:
- Floor projections indicating bed alarm status, position and side rails
- Motorized transport with stop and turn controls
- A fifth wheel for easier portability
- An integrated USB port for patient devices and storage space
- Illuminated side rails and underbed lighting
Mark O’Halla, president and CEO of Prisma Health, said the investment underscores the commitment to putting patient safety and satisfaction at the center of everything they do.
“Integrating the cutting-edge technology of these beds will streamline clinical workflows and reduce manual tasks, significantly reducing the risk of injury to caregivers and patients and enabling our team members to provide more efficient care, more accurate and compassionate to improve patient outcomes,” O’Halla said.
Prisma is currently working on the deployment of the new smart beds. This project is expected to be completed by mid-September.
