tempo, Jakarta – Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) president Erick Thohir said he does not want riots like those that occurred during the 2024 Copa America in the United States to happen in Indonesia.
During a meeting with National Police chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo on Monday, they discussed whether Indonesia’s football schedule and security complied with FIFA standards in terms of match organisers, players, referees and supporters.
Thohir said he does not want an incident like what happened during the 2024 Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami on July 14, 2024 to happen in Indonesia.
The final was postponed for several minutes after crowds rioted outside the stadium.
Riots also broke out on 11 July after Colombia’s semi-final match against Uruguay, which Colombia won 1-0.
“Joint efforts between the government, FIFA, PSSI and police will ensure that supporters get home safely. Multi-layered security will also be in place,” he informed.
Prabowo said security would be stepped up during Indonesian football matches, with reference to FIFA standards, to ensure safety.
“We have assessed security for some time now. During the conduct of several League One seasons and the U-17 World Cup series, everything was in accordance with FIFA standards. Police will provide security for the matches, but it will be security guards who will surround the field,” he added.
Prabowo added that police would remain on standby and would enter the stadium if requested.
“However, we will continue to refine our model to find the best one, but for now we will implement the existing model with reference to FIFA’s standards,” he revealed.
