Dr. Capo is Trinitas Regional Medical Center’s first Hispanic medical director.
Elizabeth, New Jersey (July 11, 2024) – RWJBarnabas Health, New Jersey’s largest and most comprehensive academic health system, and Rutgers Cancer Institute, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, have appointed Gerald Capo, MD, medical director of the Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer Center at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility.
Dr. Capo is a medical oncologist who treats all types of tumors with an emphasis on breast and gastrointestinal cancers. In this role, he provides leadership and guidance to enhance the quality, image and future growth of the oncology program.
“I am honored to further my work with RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute in this new role,” said Dr. Capo. “My desire is to create an exceptional, holistic experience for our patients and the medical professionals who care for them. I believe in making patients feel like family while collaborating with my team to provide cutting-edge, personalized treatment plans for each patient.”
Dr. Capo is the hospital’s first Hispanic medical director, a key element as the hospital is located in a predominantly Hispanic and immigrant-born neighborhood, allowing for a more comprehensive approach to better serve the needs of the community.
Prior to joining Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Dr. Capo completed a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City and a fellowship in Pain and Palliative Care at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He has collaborated on many important research papers and is currently the principal investigator or co-investigator on several cancer clinical trials. Dr. Capo recently published an article in JAMA on the treatment of COVID patients and is board certified in oncology, hematology, palliative care and internal medicine.
“Dr. Capo’s expertise and background make him an ideal fit for this leadership position in our oncology service line,” said Andrew M. Evans, PhD, DO, MBA, MSc, vice president of clinical services at Rutgers Cancer Institute and oncology system director and oncology leader for RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group. “His experience, knowledge, and comprehensive, compassionate approach to patient care will be invaluable as we plan for the future.”
Nancy M. DiLiegro, PhD, FACHE, President and CEO of Trinitas Regional Medical Center (TRMC) is excited to have Dr. Capo in this new role, stating, “Dr. Capo is ready for this role and brings a wealth of knowledge and a fresh perspective that will be invaluable as we continue to evolve. Of Hispanic descent, Dr. Capo will connect with our patients and the community on a deep level, ensuring a positive experience for all who visit Trinitas. I am confident that his dedicated leadership will enable us to enhance all aspects of our work while keeping the future of care in mind.”
