The Virginia Tech Hokies baseball team finished the 2024 season with a 32-22 record, including a 14-16 record in ACC play. It was the Hokies’ fifth consecutive winning season. Head coach John Shefke arrived in Blacksburg from Maryland in 2018, and the school’s recent success is no surprise to those who have followed Shefke for many years.
With Virginia Tech’s success, it’s no surprise that the talent on the roster has improved as well. The Hokies have had several top MLB draft prospects sign with them in recent years, including outfielder Gavin Cross, who was a top 10 pick two years ago.
The 2024 MLB Draft took place this week, with several Hawkeyes players hearing their names called.
First up is third-year infielder Carson DeMartini, who was selected 130th overall in the fourth round by the Philadelphia Phillies. In three years at Virginia Tech, the Virginia Beach native batted .311 with a .1,077 OPS, 46 home runs and 164 RBIs.
Next, junior pitcher Wyatt Parliament was taken by the New York Yankees in the seventh round, 211th overall. Parliament transferred from Rutgers University to Virginia Tech. Parliament went 4-3 with a 7.63 ERA, but struck out 59 batters and walked just 13 in 43.2 innings. Parliament’s pitching is transferable to the next level.
Here are the other three Hokies who got drafted, and when and where.
- Senior outfielder Eddie Micheletti Jr.: Eighth round, 247th overall, Toronto Blue Jays
- Junior P Jordan Little: 15th round, 449th overall, Cincinnati Reds
- Jr. IF Christian Martin: 18th round, 531st overall, St. Louis Cardinals
Congratulations to the Hokies players as they embark on the next phase of their baseball careers.
