In affluent Michigan suburb, one local supporter won’t stop canvassing for Biden
Lori Goldman founded Fems for Dems in early 2016 to boost voter turnout in Michigan’s wealthy suburban Oakland County, a key part of the state’s recent Democratic shift, and the group’s membership has swelled to nearly 18,000, Goldman said.
But after hosting a viewing party for the June 27 debate, attendees left “shocked,” she said, noting that the event may have been Biden’s worst performance “in his entire political career, maybe dating back to when he was in his grade school Christmas play.”
Weeks after the debate, Goldman says many of the Democrats she speaks to want to replace Biden.
“I’m getting emails from former clients. They’re telling the DNC they’re not going to give Joe Biden another cent. They’re not going to give him any money until they find a replacement. And I’m in group emails with bystanders,” Goldman said. “They’re sending emails saying, ‘What are we going to do? What do you think about this guy?'”
Goldman, a real estate agent whose expletive-laced responses reveal her fiery personality, believes the party has “taken our eyes off the ball” and needs to move forward with Biden. She has changed her strategy in recent weeks but plans to continue going door-to-door in support of Biden.
“I don’t care about unregistered voters anymore. I care about registered voters who lean Democratic and don’t vote. Those are the people I care about. I used to be worried about the Palestinian-Israeli mess. Everything that’s going on in the Middle East has kept people on the sidelines, but now it’s been overshadowed by all the talk about Joe Biden,” Goldman said.
