California Gov. Gavin Newsom not interested in Harris as VP, adviser says
Nathan Click, an adviser to California Governor Gavin Newsom, told NBC News that the governor has no interest in being Harris’ vice president.
“In his view, he has the best job in the world,” Click said. “He looks forward to supporting Vice President Harris and whoever she selects as her running mate.”
Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to run for California governor for second time
Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has announced that he will run again for California Governor.
In a video released by his campaign, Villaraigosa pitched himself as the “problem solver” the state needs in leadership, pointing to his years of experience as a state legislator, his bipartisan work to balance the state budget, his economic record as mayor and his efforts to reduce crime in Los Angeles.
“I know I can get big things done for California because I’ve done it before,” Villaraigosa said in the video. “As Governor, I will balance the budget. I will make sure our communities are safe and our kids have great schools. I will work to lower costs for small businesses and middle-class families. We have serious problems that money alone can’t solve. We need to focus on the things that work.”
Villaraigosa ran for governor in 2018 but lost to then-Lieutenant Governor and now Governor Gavin Newsom. California governors are limited to two four-year terms. Newsom, whose term expires in 2026, defeated a Republican recall effort in 2021 by an overwhelming margin.
Biden is due to return to the White House today.
The president, who has been self-isolating in Delaware after being diagnosed with COVID-19 last week, is scheduled to return to the White House today.
Biden’s doctor said in a letter Sunday that his COVID-19 symptoms have “significantly improved.”
The Democratic Party’s upheaval has forced Republicans to change course after nearly two years of focusing on a rematch with Biden. Now, the Trump campaign is taking on Harris and J.D. Vance is criticizing her in his first solo campaign bid. NBC’s Garrett Haacke reports on “Today.”
Where is Harris now?
The vice president is scheduled to hold a campaign rally in Milwaukee, where the Republican Party held its convention last week.
She plans to return to Washington after the event.
A majority of Democratic pledged delegates endorsed Harris on her first day of candidacy
The majority of pledged delegates to the Democratic National Convention have backed Harris, and in her first campaign speech as a presidential candidate yesterday, she said she knows how to take on Trump.
Harris quickly solidified her support in the Democratic presidential race, with all of Biden’s major rivals endorsing her less than 24 hours after Biden announced his withdrawal, and state delegate candidates quickly followed suit.
As Democrats prepare to vote on the nomination in August, many state delegates to the Democratic National Convention have unanimously endorsed Harris. Though the DNC has yet to finalize the rules for that vote, the delegation turnout for the vice presidential nominee reflects a broad coalition of support across the Democratic Party.
