Mary Trump, the estranged niece of former President Donald Trump, wrote in a blog post on Tuesday that she fears what a second Trump administration would be like in the White House.
The former president has held a slight lead in national polls since his first presidential debate with President Joe Biden on June 27. Biden’s performance in the debate raised concerns about his cognitive ability to serve another four years in the presidency.
But Mary Trump wrote on her Substack page that the US “appears to be experiencing a cognitive decline. That’s the only way I can explain the short memory that has allowed my uncle to forget the horror of those 4 harrowing years he spent in the Oval Office.”
The clinical psychologist and author is a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, but she also listed some policy decisions made by her uncle that she would “like to forget,” including Trump’s response to COVID-19 and his actions surrounding the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
“But I can’t forget any of it,” Mary Trump wrote, “and I am determined not to let the rest of the country forget, either. One of our goals is to remind as many people as possible how bad things were, and to warn them that if we continue to forget, they will get much worse.”
“If we fail, I fear he will do things to this country and its people that we can never forget or forgive,” she concluded.
Newsweek The former president’s campaign was contacted via email on Wednesday seeking comment on Mary Trump’s blog post.
Mary Trump has publicly supported Biden since his gaffe in the first debate, posting on Twitter last week that she was “proud to support the greatest presidential administration of my lifetime. American democracy depends on us defeating my fascist uncle and those who support him in November. #WeBackBidenHarris.”
As of Wednesday, 12 sitting Democratic lawmakers had called on him to step down as the party’s nominee ahead of the November election, voicing concerns about his ability to defeat Trump. As New York Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado said in a statement, Democrats said there is “no greater threat to our democracy than former President Donald Trump.”
“He must be defeated,” Delgado added in a statement posted Wednesday on X. “That is why I join the millions of Americans who are voicing legitimate concerns about whether President Biden can successfully run the election against President Trump.”
FiveThirtyEight, a polling and analysis site, reported that national polls showed Trump leading Biden by an average of 2.2 percentage points as of Wednesday. Before the June 27 debate, Trump’s lead was just 0.2 percentage points.
