Report from Washington
With Joe Biden back in the White House and Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in full swing on the campaign trail, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is visiting Washington this week.
Organizers have warned that thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters will gather in Washington for a “day of rage” against the Gaza war, as Netanyahu addresses parliament on Wednesday.
The message came after the prime minister, on his first visit outside Israel since the conflict began, said he would “present the truth about our just war”.
Ahmad Abu Znaid, executive director of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, said the protesters would “make a statement that war criminals like Netanyahu are not welcome in America.”
Prime Minister Netanyahu was invited by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson to address parliament for the first time in nine years.
This follows a protest organized by Jewish Voice for Peace on Tuesday afternoon, which included a sit-in inside the Cannon House Office Building, the oldest office building in the U.S. Congress, to protest U.S. arms sales to Israel.
Biden is due to meet with Netanyahu this week, while Trump said he also plans to meet with the prime minister on Tuesday and Friday.
