LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A pothole is bringing some unexpected positivity to Louisville residents.
What was once a typical pothole is now filled with dirt, orange fake flowers, windmills, and balloons. It’s located in a visible parking lot right outside the doors of Baptist Health Primary Care Center on Dixie Highway.
“It definitely puts a smile on your face,” said Miguel Ninham, who was walking through the parking lot with his family Friday morning.
Autumn Kasky, a receptionist at the office, said a fellow receptionist came up with the idea for the piece.
“We were joking about it and then I came in the next morning and it was there,” she said. “It started with sticks and branches. Then came creativity like flowers, balloons and windmills.”
Caskey said the goal is to make people smile, laugh and spread positivity. At the same time, she hopes it will help grab patients’ attention and prevent them from stumbling as they head to the exam room.
“(Potholes) are a danger to our patients, especially the elderly who walk through them,” Caskey said.
She posted on the I Am Dixie Highway Facebook page and received hundreds of responses. Caskey said she didn’t expect the post to get so much attention.
“But I’m kind of glad I did it,” she said. “Because you always see a lot of negativity there. So it was something good, something positive and interesting.”
Several people driving through the parking lot on Friday slowed down to admire the flowers filling the potholes. Some people stopped to take photos with their cell phones as they walked through the grounds to go to the various shops and offices.
Ninham said her family saw the Facebook post.
“My wife and mother-in-law were talking about it this morning, but I didn’t know where it was,” he said. “And when we walked by, we saw it and just laughed because it was decorated with balloons and it had little spinners on it.”
Ninham said they are “dressing up” the parking lot.
“I think it’s really great that people do that,” he said. “It’s an eyesore, so if it’s an eyesore, you’re already looking at it. You better make it nice.”
Caskey said it makes her feel good to know that this small act is creating smiles on other people’s faces.
There is an orange line in the parking lot that looks like this pothole, but other areas around it may soon get a permanent fix. Meanwhile, dirt and artificial flowers popping out of the ground are attracting a lot of attention.
